I began my journey with the First-Gen Scholars Association (FGSA) as one of the first members, and then became a Peer Mentor Lead in the first batch of peer mentors for the organization. As an intern, I ran the Instagram page, helped plan events, reached out to organizations in and out of my college, marketed FGSA through word-of-mouth and graphics, and design advertisements for the club as well as our events. My art, design, communication, and leadership skills have greatly improved!

During my internship, I was tasked with creating a t-shirt design for Family Weekend, an event where parents come to the Florida Southern College campus and spend the weekend with their child(ren). My client needed to have it submitted in a day, so I worked efficiently to get it completed and approved on time. I used summery motifs (like the sunbursts and palm tree) as well as a funky typeface with uneven lines and serifs to convey a feeling of relaxation and ease. This shirt says "This isn't a stuffy event - let your hair down and truly enjoy some quality time with your student!"

I also create flyers and advertisements for FGSA using tools ranging from the Adobe Suite to Canva. I stick to FGSA's brand by utilizing similar fonts and colors in each flyer so that our social media profiles (which I also run!) are cohesive and people can recognize our content.

I was tasked with creating a decal for first-generation faculty at Florida Southern College to proudly display on their doors. I was also in charge of communicating with suppliers about pricing and materials.

FGSA was part the parent organization of ELEVATE;
we provided funding and guidance while ELEVATE was
student-led. As FGSA's intern, I also attended some
ELEVATE meetings and helped with their events. In this picture, I'm standing with ELEVATE's first president as
we table during Southern Takeover, an event where prospective students and parents learn more about
the school. Ignore the fact that my eyes are closed!

A lot of my work at FGSE is used for virtual purposes, like for Instagram posts and virtual flyers; however, some of my designs are used in physical spaces as well. Here is an infographic I created for FGSE's First-Gen Day celebration. To win a prize, students had to answer questions about first-generation college students. If they did not read the infographic I made, they most likely did not have a correct answer! Having a graphic I made be an instrumental part of such a huge event was an enriching experience.

Near the end of my internship, I was in charge of some rebranding and renaming. In the end, we split into two organizations: FGSA, which now only focuses on
first-generation college students (instead of
first-gen AND scholarship recipients), and Pell Grant Scholars (PGS), which focuses on students who
receive the Pell Grant. I created new logos for both organizations. I passed by this booth at a campus
event a year later and saw my logos in use!
