Writing Projects
These are projects I've done for school, various organizations, and for myself.
Retrieving The Stone Breakers
The Stone Breakers, a famous painting by Gustave Courbet, was sadly destroyed in WWII. All that art historians and art lovers have to study it by is a single photograph. But what if, in the future, a group of historian time travelers were determined to get it back? This is the premise of a paper I completed for my Modern Art History course. It was an incredibly open-ended assignment, so I decided to have some fun! My creativity was rewarded: I received an A+ on the assignment and my professor gave me high praise, even saying that my paper was one of the favorites that he has ever read.
Through a 21st Century Lens:
Pablo Picasso and
Les Demoiselles d’Avignon
In this research paper, I assess how paintings from the "old masters" like Pablo Picasso were only meant to be seen by one audience. Now, however, anyone can easily see these paintings, allowing for a variety of opinions and perspectives to be born. Here, I dissect different ways that one of the most (in)famous paintings in history, Les Demoiselles d'Avignon, has been interpreted.
Does Advertising in TV Create and Reinforce Unrealistic Body Images?
As many of us are aware, the effect of televised media has had a major impact on how people view their bodies. While a lot of this news is grim, in this paper I also touch on how TV media is helping solve the issue it has created.
Power Through Idealism
This art history paper discusses the similarities and differences between two titans of art and civilization: ancient Greece and Rome. Here, I dissect a work of art from each region, explaining how slight differences remark on the culture they were created in.
Hope and Hopelessness
In this paper, I compare and contrast two paintings with similar compositions and mediums but with greatly different themes, with one portraying a surge of triumph and the other showing an utter loss of hope.
